Introduction to Pilot Projects
In the framework of the first phase (2006 – 2009) of the MED-ENEC Project, ten pilot projects (PP) were established to demonstrate best practices and new technologies as well as integrative approaches for the efficient use of energy and the use of renewable energies in the building sector in the MEDA countries.
To select the 10 PP, a public competition for pilot projects initiatives was held. In August 2006 an evaluation committee selected ten PP for support. Between 10/06 and 02/07 contracts with each of the selected pilot project initiatives were signed. Depending on the size of the project and the evaluation result of the competition, the contracts covered costs up to approx. 100,000 EUR.
During 2009 all PP have started the implementation process, in 7 projects the construction is completed (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine & Turkey). Three projects (Morocco, Syria, and Tunisia) are in the final stage of construction.
The PP have a good potential for further replication as they prove that substantial energy savings can be realised in a cost effective way. This is demonstrated in a balanced mixture of different house types and technologies.
