In order to reduce both energy supply requirements and the ever-growing impact on the environment of inefficient buildings and installations, the MED-ENEC Project on Energy Efficiency in the Construction Sector in the Mediterranean is aiming to boost energy efficiency measures (EE) and the use of renewable energies (RE) in the construction sector. This includes increasing the knowledge about energy efficient design of buildings, new construction techniques and installations to show their practical feasibility and to promote their adaptation and development.
 
 
 
Energy Efficiency is a key for economic and environmental performance of a country, a community or a company. Therefore, it has become an important issue in a global market with more and more emphasis on needs to improve productivity and competitiveness and at the same time reducing energy consumption and global climate impacts. read

Support to Large Building Programmes (LBP)

 The support for large building programmes is the key strategic approach of MED-ENEC II for scaling up propagation and the actual construction of energy efficient buildings. Individual pilot projects did prove the technical feasibility and high saving potential of EE/RE measures in the first phase of MED-ENEC. However, an important lesson learnt was that there are high transaction costs for this type of projects representing an obstacle for the economic feasibility and quick dissemination of the model buildings. New urban development provide a wide range of opportunities for  improving EE, from the zoning, urban planning, architectural design, construction, and installation technologies many steps can be made to reduce the energy consumption cost and CO2  emissions.

Therefore, in the second phase of MED-ENEC, large building programmes are supported in order to achieve economies of scale, broad learning effects, awareness raising and finally development of the markets.
