Energy Efficient Building Codes: Status Quo of the Arab Countries

MED-ENEC organized a one day workshop on Energy Efficient Building Codes on 28 September, 2011, in Beirut, Lebanon. The workshop was held back to back with the Beirut Energy Forum that took place from 29 to 30 September, 2011.

The aim of the workshop was to bring together experts from MED-ENEC's beneficiary countries, the League of Arab States and the European Union to highlight the building codes in the partner countries in terms of status, implementation and challenges. Additionally, the Unified Arab Building code and the EU Directive on Energy Performance of Buildings (EPBD) were presented by Mr. Waleed El-Araby from the League of Arab States' Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Housing Ministers, and Mr. Eduardo Maldonado, Coordinator of the European “Buildings Concerted Action”.

Opening speeches were addresses by Mr. Pierre Khoury (Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation, organizers of the Beirut Energy Forum), Ms. Salha Abusabaa, (League of Arab States), Mr Maciej Madalinski, (European Union Delegation to Beirut), and Dr. Kurt Wiesegart (MED-ENEC), in which they all stressed on the importance of harmonization and implementation of building codes as a means of energy cnservation necessary to address the world energy challenge.

The discussions results were presented in session 5 of the Beirut Energy Forum, a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Kurt Wiesegart, Team Leader of MED-ENEC.
